In 1984 Marvel Comics, Sunbow Productions and Hasbro all teamed up to develop an animated TV show devoted to the Transformers action figure line. The show was an instant hit and has gone on to become a beloved classic, inspiring future generations of fans, a full length theatrical movie, and even a live action movie over 20 years latter. What makes Transformers so great? Honestly it is hard to say. Personally I loved it from the very beginning so much so that to this day I still have the entire series on my I-pod to watch.
The Story
Basically the Autobots and Decepticons have been waging a war for supremacy over their home planet for thousands of years. This never ending war has lead to the draining of the planets resources and the Autobots set out to find a new power source to maintain themselves. Not willing to give their enemies any advantage the Decepticons follow the Autobots and engage them in a space battle which causes them to crash land on the planet Earth where they lie dormant for centuries. Fast forward to the present day and they are awaken by the eruption of the volcano their ship has crashed into. From there the Autobots and Decepticons continue their war for energy only now they fight on earth and assume Earth disguises.
The story is told from mainly from the Autobots point of view through the eyes of 2 human characters, Spike and his father Sparkplug. Most of the stories are written by various writers from other action/adventure cartoons and even several big name science fiction writers have worked on the series from time to time. The action and animation is quit good for a show from the early 80's and still holds up pretty well even today. The range of stories and diverse cast of characters makes for a truly engaging experience for the viewer. The action is all top notch and the characterisation is done really well. When I was a kid I couldn't' get enough of the Transformers and now as an adult I still find my self just as drawn to these lovable Robots in Disguise as I have always been.
